This species is found in open disturbed habitats, including roadsides, fencerows, old fields, pastures, riverine habitats, etc. It is an annual or perennial, herbaceous, growing as long as 1-3 m. The leaves are long, and deeply lobed. The flowers are trumpet-shaped, and can be scarlet-red, pink or white. The flowers often attract hummingbirds.
